Dear Mother,

??? I will try to write you a few lines to let you know I am well and having a great time. It is hard for me to write as there is of little interest happenings here, but I will do the best I can. I like this country very much. I spend a good many idle moments watching the areoplanes flying around. They are as plentiful here as automobiles are in Wilcox. I certainly have had a lot of travel and many interesting experiences since I entered the service. I feel like a millionaire as I went south for the winter and now am spending the summer in foreign countries. I would not trade places with any of the boys in civilian life in Wilcox. Of course, we have some hard work but it is soon forgotten in our times of pleasure. I would certainly like to receive a letter from home as it has been some time since I have had one. (Perhaps one is on the way to me now.) Tell my friends I send them my best and ask them to drop me a card. The people here are a thrifty lot and to watch them one would never imagine the country was at war. I am learning to speak their language which I find is not so very hard. Why I have only been here but a short time and I can already say "oui," (meaning yes).

??? The climate here is very much the same as that of Pennsylvania. All of the boys are in the best of spirits and anxious to get a crack at Fritz. When I come back I will tell you all about the fine times I am having.

??? Mother, be sure to write often. News is scarce so I must close as it is now time for supper. Something I seldom miss as I carry my appetite with me..Again goodbye, with love and best wishes to all. Be sure to write soon to your,

Dearest Florence, My Darling -?

??? Here is my Christmas Poem to you:

?

Merry Christmas to you my family so dear,

A bright cheery Yuletide and Happy New Year.

While I in my foxhole, so damp and so cold,

Am dreaming of Home and the Story of Old,

Of Christ in the manger, of angel's sweet song,

Of Home o'er the ocean, the Place I belong.

Back over the mountains, far over the seas,

Where store clerks and postmen are busy as bees.

Children in expectation await Old St. Nick,

I'm thinking especially of David and Dick,

And to gather at Swanson's on Christmas Eve,

There in happiness, each a gift to receive.

Then back to our fireside to trim the green tree,

And arrange the boy's presents from Florence and me,

From Santa, from kinfolk and some from friends,

So finally to bed, all preparation ends.

Then in the morning before break of day,

The race for the stockings, the laughter so gay.

With shouts of surprise and the patter of feet;

Was there ever to Dad any music so sweet?

Then my spirit returns to my foxhole so drear,

And I pray that I come Home in this New Year,

That peace on Earth and good will toward men,

Shall be granted by God to be soon real again.

?

Your lonely, homesick,

Charley
